Menno’s physicality powers it past MCS boys
Menno earns first win of the year
Written By: Mitchell Republic Sports | Jan 7th 2021 - 10pm.
A second-quarter run pushed Menno past the Mitchell Christian boys basketball team, 47-40, on Thursday. It’s Menno’s first win of the year.
The Wolves opened an 11-11 tie by outscoring the Golden Eagles, 16-8, in the second frame. After taking a 27-19 lead into halftime, Menno never relinquished the lead.
“The second quarter was a tough one,” MCS coach Jesse Tolsma said. “Really all night, it was a tough night shooting the ball. It wasn’t going in. We got good looks, but couldn’t put them home like we have throughout the year. We competed on the defensive end, but Menno has a nice, physical team.”
Brady Fergen led the Wolves with 10 points, including a pair of 3-pointers in the second quarter. Josh Heckenlaible and Treyton Sayler both have seven points.
Aiden Lieber and Nathanael Anderberg scored 13 and 12 points, respectively, for Mitchell Christian. Micah Frey grabbed 11 rebounds in the loss.
“We didn’t quite match their physicality,” Tolsma said. “But overall, the competition level, it was good to see us play hard and compete on the defensive end at a little bit higher level.”
Menno (1-5) hosts Alcester-Hudson on Friday. Mitchell Christian (2-4) hosts Freeman Academy/Marion on Saturday.
