National Organization of Coaches Association Directors and The Jason Foundation proudly recognize and support September as National Suicide Prevention Month. Throughout the month, individuals and organizations around the country have plans to highlight the problem of suicide and advocate its prevention. Almost 46,000 Americans took their own lives in 2020, making suicide one of the leading causes of death in our nation. Suicide rates in the US have climbed 33% since 2000. Even more concerning is that suicide and suicide attempts among our nation’s youth (ages 10-24) are on the rise. According to information released by the CDC, nationally 18.8% of high school youth had seriously considered attempting suicide, 15.7% had made a suicide plan, and 8.9% had made one or more suicide attempts. One of the ways to reduce that number is by talking about suicide and suicidal ideation, which can spur meaningful conversations about mental health and potentially save lives. Suicide Prevention Month is a time to remember those affected by suicide, raise awareness, and focus on prevention efforts. Join the conversation and reach out to those who have been personally affected by suicide, raise awareness, and connect those struggling with suicidal thoughts to professional counselors and treatment services that can help them. The Jason Foundation offers many different ideas on how you can become involved. To find more information, visit their website at jasonfoundation.com and look for the “How to Get Involved” tab. A special section exists for Suicide Prevention Month.

On behalf of the Student Council, we would like to invite you and your business to participate in this year’s homecoming parade. The parade theme is “Through the Years” (think stages or events in a lifetime). We would love to have your business participate in the parade. We simply ask that no political content be included on floats. The parade will take place on Friday, September 30th. If you are interested in participating in the Homecoming Parade, please call the school at 387-5161 or bring your float to the lineup on Friday at 10:30 am. The parade will begin at 10:45. We would like business floats to line up on Juniper Street, beginning parallel to the school buses and going east. Business floats will follow the class floats, which will line up on High Street. The parade route will start at the corner of 5th Street and Juniper heading North, turn onto Heil Street and head East, then turn onto S Pine Street and head South, and finally turn onto Juniper Street and head West to end at the school. Questions about Homecoming Activities can be sent to shelby.sherard@k12.sd.us. Thank you for your support of Menno Public School! Student Council Member

Homecoming Theme: “Through the Years” Dress Up Days: • Monday: Recreate a Childhood Picture • Tuesday: College/Career Day (where do you want to go/what do you want to do after high school) • Wednesday: Dress like an “Old” Person (the interpretation of what old means/looks like can be left up to the kids 😊) • Thursday: Walking Yearbook (wear a t shirt and bring a sharpie to sign each other’s shirts throughout the day) *** The homecoming t shirt this year will be white and designed around this purpose (more information to come); however, students are welcome to bring any t shirt that can be marked on. Administration has asked that shirts NOT be worn while being signed. This means that students will need to have another shirt to wear any time signing is happening. We would like the majority of students to bring their own sharpie for this, but student council will have extras on hand to lend out to students that cannot obtain one. • Friday: Forever Fan (trapper spirit day) Homecoming Week Activities: • Monday: Skit Practice; Coronation at 7:30 • Tuesday: Dodgeball Tournament 8:20-10:00 • Wednesday: Powederpuff Football 1:35-3:20 • Thursday: Male VB 1:35-3:20 • Friday: 8:15-10:15 Decorate floats as a class 10:45 - 11:30 Parade and clean up 11:30-11:55 Pep Rally 12:00-12:25 HS lunch (MS with advisors) 12:30-1:00 MS lunch (HS with advisors)

Information for the Jim River Trappers Middle School Football Jamboree at Baker Field, Scotland. The start time for the tournament is 10:00 a.m. Admission will be $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for students (good for all day); this is a fundraiser for our football team. We have 5 teams and will be using a round-robin format. Because each team plays four games, we have lowered the number of total offensive plays in a game to 30. The times below are approximate—if a team needs more rest time in between games, that will be given. We ask your cooperation in the following: no fans are to be inside the fence—they can sit in the stadium or be outside the fence. The five teams are: Avon, Corsica-Stickney, Gayville-Volin, Jim River (Scotland/Menno), and Tripp-Delmont/Armour/Andes Central/Dakota Christian. The champion will be the team with the best record (tie-breaker, if needed, is head-to-head). Students in grades 9-12 interested in FCCLA or students who have been in FCCLA in the past, that would like to be a member for the 2022-2023 school year need to fill out an FCCLA membership form and pay your membership dues. The membership forms are on the table in Mrs. Fischer's office so you will need to stop by to get one. After you fill it out, you can put it under the FACS classroom door. Please do NOT bring these forms back without your dues. FCCLA dues cover national and state membership costs. This year FCCLA dues are going to be $15, and you can make your checks payable to the Menno FCCLA Chapter. ALL dues and memberships forms need to be to Miss Lau by next Tuesday (September 13th). There will be a chapter meeting at a later date. Please be thinking about what you would like to do for your FCCLA projects!
